Ecosystem Fund Profile
A quadrangle is an enclosed space surrounded by buildings or structures. It’s a spot available to the people occupying the buildings around it, creating a place to exchange resources and to connect with neighbours. Quadrangle NL thought this was an appropriate brand for its non-profit—a place where 2SLGBTQI+ people can come in and be surrounded by support.
Since 2015, Quadrangle NL has offered services and programs designed to create social connections, provide resources, and improve the quality of life for Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2SLGBTQI+ community. This year, it received nearly $250,000 from Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC) and the Government of Canada through the Ecosystem Fund. This initiative aims to break down barriers for 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs by supporting community organizations that enhance sustainability, drive growth, and promote innovation.
Fund development and communications officer Morgan Moakler Jessiman said the funding will be used to create a new program specifically for 2SLGBTQI+ people who are interested in starting or scaling a business.
“This program is designed to create a kind of a business in a box so that people that are looking to start their own businesses or continue their existing businesses can have this fully fleshed out, realized program,” said Morgan.
In 2018, a Statistics Canada survey showed that 40 per cent of 2SLGBTQI+ people make less than $20,000 per year.
“That’s a stat we take really seriously,” said Morgan.
A CGLCC and Deloitte study reported that 20 per cent of respondents experienced challenges scaling their business as a result of being part of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, citing such barriers such as access to mentorship, financing, and global trade. Quadrangle NL’s program is designed to reduce these barriers, focusing on directly supporting aspiring or new 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs in Newfoundland and Labrador. It will include tailored supports, such as system navigation of the legal and financial requirements to create and operate a business, workshops to build and grow entrepreneurial skills, networking events and opportunities, and a mentorship program — it really will surround people in a quadrangle of resources.
“We’re thrilled that the Ecosystem Fund can help create such important and impactful resources for 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs in Newfoundland and Labrador. 2SLGBTQI+-owned businesses are essential to Canada’s economy and we’re looking forward to seeing more of them serve people across the east coast,” said Tyler Demers, CGLCC Director, Grants and Program Development.
