Meet Our Interns: Zoe Vandekas (she/her, they/them)

Zoe Vandekas is a fourth year Intercultural Relations student at Ryerson University. Their most inspiring and fulfilling professional endeavours so far have consisted of working with immigrant youth to assist in progressing literacy levels, and working as a student teacher in ESL classrooms. They have a continuous desire to learn (and apply) new languages, and currently speaks three fluently; Greek, Spanish and English! Observing and appreciating various cultures along their travels remains their favorite hobby.

1. What is your role at CGLCC?
   
   My role is Intern, Sales and Promotions Coordinator.
   
   
2. Before working at CGLCC, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
   
   Working a two-year internship at Frontier College. I had a commitment in developing literacy and linguistic skills in students from junior kindergarten to grade six. This experience was so fulfilling and phenomenal that I currently continue to volunteer with them. 
   
   
3. What drew you to CGLCC originally?
   
   I was first told about the CGLCC’s work from a close associate who spoke highly of the organization and its employees. I then decided to do some research on the organization’s services and available opportunities. Once I recognized the level of commitment CGLCC had towards developing possibilities for LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, I became fixated on becoming a part of the team to help the community grow and prosper.
   
   
4. How will this position with the CGLCC help you in your career development?
   
   The CGLCC has already helped me in my career development by widening the scope of present and future business endeavours. I really aim to increase my hands-on experience, enhance my business networks and connections, and make the most out of all tactical projects that arise. There’s a lot to learn everyday and I’m truly excited to work hand in hand with the team and benefit one another however possible in this experience.
   
   
5. Who would your dream dinner guest be?
   
   Gioconda Belli, a Nicaraguan poet and author. Gioconda’s literature regarding life conflicts in femininity, individuality, trauma, culture and sexuality highlight some of the most beautiful and relatable anecdotes I’ve read to date. For those who speak Spanish – El Pais Bajo Mi Piel is an incredible read.
